Select the kind of phone you are transferring the accounts to, and then the website will generate a QR code that you can scan. Google Authenticator is the granddaddy of two-factor authentication apps, but it's old and has some severe downsides. Go to your Google Account page, select Security in the left-hand navbar, select 2-Step Verification, scroll down to Authenticator app and select "Change phone." If an iPhone is involved in any step of this procedure, you'll have to use a desktop or laptop computer instead. Scan the QR code on the old phone with the new phone's camera, and you'll be all set. How to Enable 2FA for GMail There are two primary ways to use two-factor authentication - text message or via an authenticator app. After you set up two-step verification, you can use the Google Authenticator app to create your verification codes. Select Import Accounts, then Scan QR code. Keep that on the screen, open the Authenticator app on the new phone and go to Transfer Accounts again. Your old phone will then generate its own QR code. ![]() Select Export Accounts, enter your phone's PIN or your fingerprint, and select the accounts to be exported. Sadly, Google Authenticator is still only available on mobile devices, but alternative methods are. All you have to do is scan a QR code for the service you want to turn 2FA on for, and the app will. Google Authenticator is a super-handy app when you need an extra layer of data protection. In the Authenticator app on the old phone, tap the menu icon in the upper right and select Transfer Accounts. For years, security experts have recommended using authentication apps to generate these codes. The only way to recover Authenticator if you've lost your phone is to make sure you have a backup copy of your QR code in advance. You'll need to have both phones with you to do this, and both will need to have the latest version of the Google Authenticator app installed. If you still have access to your old Authenticator, you can easily recover all your accounts onto a new device by scanning your QR code with that device. But as of May 2020, you can easily transfer all your authenticator "seeds" directly from one Android phone to another. Note: If your camera isnt working properly, you can enter the QR code and URL manually. Use your devices camera to scan the QR code from the Set up Authenticator page on your computer. Until recently, Google Authenticator made you start from scratch all over again when you got a new phone. Open the Authenticator app, select Add account from the Customize and control icon in the upper right, and then select Other account (Google, Facebook, etc.).
